5 Things More Dangerous than White Water Rafting

How dangerous is whitewater rafting? That’s a question we hear frequently at Raft1. People call us up and ask whether it’s safe to send loved ones on rafting trips.

We certainly understand their concern and do our best to quell their fears, because the truth is, we all put ourselves at risk in other ways that make rafting pale in comparison.

There are crazy things we do every day, things we all take for granted.

We zip around in automobiles at high speeds and travel outside the country and do nothing to address our sedentary lifestyles. Here are a few things you do all the time that are much riskier.

Driving to and From Work

Of course, it’s not just driving to work that can be dangerous. It can be to and from anywhere else you go. As you probably know, driving is the most dangerous form of motorized transportation. You are more likely to die in a car crash than any other way to die.

You can’t control how other people behave on the roads, and you are subject to dangers such as drunken driving and texting behind the wheel. Distracted driving has become a major issue on the roads these days.

We use our cars every day, even for trips where we could just as easily walk or ride a bike. This ingrained habit is likely your most dangerous one.

Buying Food in Foreign Cities

Here in the United States, you probably trust the food you buy on a day-to-day basis. There are stringent health standards in place that govern restaurants and grocery stores.

However, in many foreign countries, there are no such restrictions. You could actually risk your life by indulging in the delicious-smelling meats from a food cart. They could be undercooked, or the water used to prepare them could be unsanitary.

Purchasing any type of food from a vendor while you are abroad is definitely a bigger gamble than taking a whitewater rafting excursion.

Traveling Out of the Country

When you go somewhere else in the world, you can face a range of scary situations. Some foreign countries have become targets for terrorism, while others have wars raging. Still others may simply not keep as good an eye on criminals as they do at home.

You put yourself in harm’s way whenever you travel out of the country.

Living a Sedentary Lifestyle

If you are living a sedentary lifestyle, then you face a higher risk of suffering from a range of health problems, from high blood pressure to obesity to heart issues.
